We must admit, social situations are not one of our strong points. We tend to feel awkward under many, if not every, circumstance, especially ones where we have to meet new people and act all serious. Basically, we were feeling pretty nervous about going to, and being a part of, a business meeting for the first time.
We dressed fairly smart, hoping to make a good first impression and we prepared a couple of notes to take to the meeting, mainly taken from the module hand book. We also took the placement/client contract for them to sign if they did decide to take us on board.
Before the meeting we discussed a few answers to some potential questions we thought they might ask us, we were just looking forward to getting the ball rolling on the project.
When we arrived at the meeting, Steve explained that he had received other emails from students who were also interested in the placement but he said our email in particular stood out, which was great to hear.
Steve shared with us his app ideas which allowed us to see exactly what they were after in terms of their idea. We now know they want their business to be heavily publicised through social media and the Kickstarter campaign is the most important aspect to get completed.
They want to raise £150,000 through the kickstarter website. Therefore they need us to create the kickstarter page, run social media and bring new ideas to the table.
They made it clear that the social aspect of the product is key. They explained that after six large focus groups there target market is women between the ages of 20-34.
It was interesting to hear that Steve, even though he doesn't use social media, has famous connections who could help promote the product online, which would help with raising money for the Kickstarter campaign.
They gave us a few ideas for the video that will go up on the Kickstarter website, but they're mainly leaving it up to us to script and film. Steve had also produced a logo as an example, but told us to create another one. He said that he wanted it to contain movement and start us off with a strong brand identity.
We conversed and shared ideas for around 2 hours, 100 cups of coffee and a million ideas later, the meeting came to a close.
we discussed some brilliant ideas and introduced them to the world of social media, after they explained to us that they didn't use any social networking sites.
We left the meeting with our heads held high, it went very well, and thankfully, very smoothly. Finally, we secured a placement. We even did a celebratory high five to commemorate the success of the meeting.
It's going to be a wonderful adventure.
Becky and Ellie
